1. Legacy Fleet – The "Orange Door" Cars

Built By: Nippon Sharyo (Japan)
Years Built: 1982–2009 (in different batches)
Electric? Yes – powered by overhead wires using 1500V DC.
Fun Fact: These cars are known for their orange doors and classic stainless steel look. They have big windows and ride super smoothly.
Use: These are the main workhorses of the South Shore Line. You'll see them on almost every train!
Pairing: Usually run in married pairs (two cars connected back-to-back and share equipment).
2. Single-Level Cab Cars
Purpose: Some of the Nippon Sharyo cars are cab cars, which have a driving cab so the train can be operated in either direction.
Look For: A large window at the front with a bright headlight and horns.
3. New Cars – Stadler FLIRT Double-Decker EMUs (Coming Soon!)
Ordered: 2020s
Builder: Stadler (a Swiss train company known for fancy, modern trains!)
Type: FLIRT bi-level electric multiple units
Electric? ✅ Yes – also powered by 1500V DC overhead wires
Features:
Two levels of seating!
Modern interiors, USB ports, accessibility ramps
Better air conditioning and heating
Quiet and smooth ride
Use: These new trains will help NICTD expand service, especially with the Double Track Project and the West Lake Corridor opening soon.
Fun Fact: These will be the first double-decker trains ever on the South Shore Line!
4. Maintenance and Work Equipment
