The Airport Transit System (ATS) at O’Hare International Airport is a fully automated, driverless people mover that transports passengers between the airport’s terminals, parking lots, and the Multi-Modal Facility (which includes rental car services and access to Metra and Pace). The system is about 2.5 miles long and operates 24/7, offering frequent service every few minutes.
Originally opened in 1993, the ATS underwent a major modernization project beginning in 2018. It reopened in stages from 2021 to 2022 with new Bombardier vehicles, updated stations, and extended service to the Multi-Modal Facility. The upgraded system is smoother, quieter, and better suited to handle large volumes of travelers and airport employees.
The ATS plays a critical role in helping people navigate O’Hare, especially for making connections between terminals or reaching parking and public transit. It’s free to ride, and with its modern updates, it now provides a faster and more comfortable way to get around one of the world’s busiest airports.
