1974: The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) is created to oversee public transit across northeastern Illinois. Suburban bus services were still run by many small local companies back then.
1980s: Pace Is Born
1983: The RTA creates Pace Suburban Bus by merging over 60 suburban bus systems into one unified service.
1984: Pace officially begins operation with blue and white buses and its own brand identity.
1990s: Growing the Network
1992: Pace introduces Vanpool and Paratransit services to help people with disabilities and workers traveling to jobs far from train stations.
1996: Pace starts Dial-a-Ride services in some areas for flexible pick-up and drop-off.
2000s: Tech and Accessibility
2004: Pace ADA Paratransit becomes official, offering services across the whole region for people with disabilities.
2008: Introduces real-time bus tracking systems on some routes.
2010s: Modern Moves
2011: Launch of Pace Pulse, a new rapid bus concept with fewer stops and faster service.
2017: First Pulse line begins planning—Pulse Milwaukee Line.
2019: Pulse Milwaukee Line opens, offering fast and frequent service from Niles to Jefferson Park CTA Blue Line station.
2020s: Faster and Greener
2020: COVID-19 causes service cuts, but Pace keeps running essential routes.
2021–2022: Gradual recovery and new safety improvements like touchless payments.
2023: Pulse Dempster Line begins construction. Plans grow for more Pulse routes!
2024: Pace commits to a zero-emissions fleet by 2040, testing electric buses and planning charging stations.
2025:
Expansion of Pulse network continues, with faster buses and better shelters.
More coordination with Metra and CTA to help riders connect easier across the whole system.
