When the ATS commenced operations in 1993, it utilized the French-designed Matra VAL 256 vehicles. These were fully automated, rubber-tired people mover cars, known for their reliability and efficiency. The initial fleet consisted of 13 vehicles, with two additional units acquired in 1996 from Jacksonville's Skyway system, bringing the total to 15. Each car was capable of operating independently or coupled into longer trains, accommodating the varying passenger volumes throughout the day. The VAL 256 fleet served the airport for over two decades, providing continuous service between terminals and parking areas.
